What's it like working in Denmark?
#podcast #denmark #expatlife
This week, Derek and Annie welcome back Mike Walsh to talk about what it’s really like to work in Denmark. As a former host of the show, Mike has not only worked in the studio, but has worked in Denmark as well as hiring and managing both Danish and international workers. He shares all of his insights of navigating the work culture in Denmark and around Europe as he has managed and visited international work sites.
You’ll learn more about the culture clashes one may face in Denmark and learn whether or not the famous Danish work life balance exists. The trio discuss what stereotypes exist for Americans, Danes, and other nationalities that may or may not be true. Annie reveals the nationalities of her favorite colleagues, and Derek explains the Danish workplace benefits his American brain could not comprehend when he first started working in Denmark.
All this and more is covered in this episode and you shouldn’t forget to share it with any friends or colleagues who are thinking about or have made the move to Denmark.

Interesting conversation, and enjoyed learning about the differences between US and DK in the workplace. Mike, can you return and say a bit more about _what kind of work you do_ , apart from managing? Does it take all your time, since you left the podcast? I think you should re-host.🙂 Annie, several times you just say "love" ...not sure if you're aware of it yourself, or just thinking out loud...like I'm doing here. Derek, I appreciate your honesty and humour.😊 When I hear about the American workplace, where you can't leave if you're ill, I shake my head. Completely unfair and unhealthy.

I think most people and work places in Denmark are not influenced by USA. Most look at work place culture in USA and feel sorry for USA. No one really wants the work life balance of USA. No maternity leave, no holidays etc etc. Don’t worry, no one in Denmark looks to USA for inspiration. I wouldn’t want to have work life balance I had in New Zealand, where I am born and raised, either. Denmark is great. Loved your show today. Mike really had great insight and was pretty accurate. So interesting hearing everyone explain the way American people are in general.

Derek, why doesn't Mike cohost the Podcast anymore? What does Mike do apart from you, workwise? Also, it would be interesting to listen to a video wherein we learn what both of your income is from both UA-cam and your other endeavors. I have always been curious as to how people survive and thrive creating YT content here and working in a foreign country. Apologies if I appear personal. My intent has often been misunderstood, which saddens me. I never mean to be rude. I am just naturally inquisitive.

It’s a necessity I’m afraid , especially with regard to certain religions and primitive values and ideology. It doesn’t belong in Denmark nor in Europe nor in the US, nowhere. Be careful though and don’t ever support a certain type of immigrants because they want gay people like you and me dead and they would kill us if they could and also subjugate women . Don’t be naive folks

  • @willard39

Biggest problem is lumping everyone into the label of "immigrant." People who just show up with no plan and demand you take care of them because of some nebulous conflict are not immigrants and they're not refugees. They're opportunists and con men (mostly men) who are looking for the best welfare deal. It's disruptive and dangerous and I don't blame any country who cracks down on it. People who follow the rules and bring the best of their culture to add to their new home are immigrants. Asylum seekers should be held to a stricter standard and should go to the nearest safe country only after proving they are, in fact, asylum seekers.

In Sweden, especially in younger age, a common phrase is "allt bra?". It literally means "everything's good?". To that phrase, in 99% you expect a simple "ja, och du?" ("yes, and you?") back as an answer because it's more of the American "how are you?" and not a sincere question.

Here in the Faroe Islands, we use the same Danish educational system, but we have our own alphabet, just like the Danes have their. Ours has no C, no Q, and no X and we have no Å, which the Danes use. we have Ð (Edd) and 2 double letters EI, EY and OY. The Danes don't use those either. So for example: No = Nej (Danish) = Nei (Faroese). the Danes use "ej" to make the same sound as our EI letter. it sounds exactly the same, just spelled differently. I started school at 7. I think they have pre-school now which is 5 or 6, not sure. we had Danish as a subject in school in the third grade, so by the age of 9, I started reading Danish and we started reading English in 6th grade. Now it's earlier I think, 4th or 5th grade. That said I knew how to speak English before I learned to read it because of television. all my Saturday morning cartoons were in English, now everything is Danish, the kids today are ruined.

A system of measurement is a language. To convert the Untied States to metric, would be the same as to try and change the national language form English to Spanish, because Spanish is a much more simple language and in a number of ways, better than English, Such a thing would be flat out impossible.
